How Long Does it Take to Heat Treat Pallets?

We heat treat two to three loads of pallets a day in our kiln.  Loads take about two and a half hours to cook during the warmer months and up to four hours during the winter months.  Heat treating is done to kill any bugs that are in the pallets before they are shipped internationally.  Because of the extra step in the production process we ask for  a little more lead time when ordering heat treated pallets.

Our regular customers know the information we'll ask of them to design pallets that meet their shipping needs. However if you are new to ordering a shipment of wooden pallets, here are some of the questions we'll be asking when you call.

What Size Pallet?

For example 48 X 40. 48 represents the length, or runner length. The 40 represents the width, or the decking length. Remember that is just and example. We manufacturer wood pallets of all sizes.

Two way or four way pallet? 

Two way means the pallet's stringers will be solid, and four way means the stringers will have notches for forklift access from all four sides of the pallet.

How much weight will you put on this pallet?

This will determine the design of the pallet and the thickness of the boards.

Will the pallet be used for international shipping?

We recommend heat treating all pallets that are shipped overseas to prevent any hold ups in port.

There are other things that go into designing the perfect pallet for your load, but if you know those three things on your first call I am sure we can figure out the rest together.

This morning I spoke with a potential customer who said he was shipping his product out of the country and needed to use heat treated pallets for the products going to China, but not to the rest of the countries to which he shipped.  I told him I thought it was a good idea to heat treat pallets going to any destination overseas.

Don’t Let your Shipment get Quarantined in Port

According to the NWPCA there are some countries that may be enforcing ISPM 15 (a regulation satisfied with heat treated pallets) that are not on the official, published list of countries.  The last thing a shipper wants is to have his product quarantined in port because his wood packaging does not have the ISPM 15 stamp on it.  Heat treating only costs about $1 extra per pallet and that is much less expensive than having a load quarantined.

For wood packaging to be ISPM 15 compliant "Wood packaging material should be heated in a schedule that achieves a minimum core temperature of 56ºC for a minimum of 30 minutes."  Pallets should also be marked with the IPPC stamp.  Below is a list of countries that are enrolled in the program.

I started working for Dominion Pallet 23 years ago, but before that I had never really thought about pallets. The guys in the warehouse ran into pallets with their forklifts as they were loading and unloading trucks and would even use the pallets to stand on. If they broke a board they never gave it any thought as they pitched it in the trash pile. I never really thought about the cost or construction of those pallets.  I always thought that a pallet was just several pieces of wood nailed together. Boy, was I wrong.

  • What product will go on the pallet
  • The weight the pallet will hold
  • The cost of the pallet
  • Will the pallet work for the business

Insights on How Your Pallet Order is Filled

You contact Dominion Pallet to order shipping pallets to your specifications. What happens from there? Matt Yancey answers questions on how a typical order is processed:

Your pallet load starts with a phone call or e-mail and then is put into the production schedule by Scott Walton.  The process begins by cutting lumber to size. Lumber is run on either the Woodmizer system that turns cants into boards or run through the planer and then cut on the KM-16 saw. 

After the lumber is cut to size the runners may have to be notched or boards may have to be chamfered before the pallets are ready to be made.  The Viking nailers make the pallets once the lumber is ready for production.  A full load of pallets takes about 2 1/2 hours to make once it reaches the nailer. 

Finally if your load needs to be heat treated, then it is loaded into the heat treating chamber and cooked.  Heat treatment can take between two and four hours depending on the outside temperature.

The US and Canada are expected to remove the ISPM 15 exemption on Wood Packaging Materials transported across the border in 2012

On December 2, the American Lumber Standard Committee issued a notice of a proposed amendment that would remove the exemption of ISPM 15 labeling requirements of wood packaging materials (WPM) from Canada to the US. Currently WPMs from the US to Canada are also exempt from ISPM 15. Canada is also planning to amend its regulation of WPMs and begin adhering to the regulation. Both countries are developing a harmonized timeline to implement the proposed changes and full implementation is anticipated in 2012.

In short, this means US companies shipping to Canada will soon be required to use heat treated pallets and other wood packaging materials.
